Our educational outreach programs are evolving and growing. In our
first year of operation we reached 500 youth and by 1999 we reached 3,000 youth
with our various programs. In 1999 we instituted free daytime lecture
demonstrations of our opera productions for adults and we continue to provide
free pre-concert lectures.L'Opera Piccola presents a condensed version and
commentary of our operas to Chicago area school children whom are introduced to
fine music and a unique theatrical experience. Our young audience members
evaluate the performance and comments have included "opera doesn't have to
be serious" and "opera isn't just one big song with a fat lady
singing".
Each year some of our donated opera production tickets are
given to youth and families in the Chicago Merit Music Program, the
Ravenswood Music Institute, and the Chicago Children's Choir.
In 1999, we
introduced a new program we call LOP OPER(Opera for Everyone). Over the
past year L'Opera Piccola singers traveled to five Chicago area public schools
and talked to 2,000 children about opera, classical music and composers.
In this program we teach the children songs, give them a chance to participate
with props and costumes, and explain opera stories and make connections
today. We give our lectures in both English and Spanish, when necessary.
