Since 1996, L'Opera Piccola (LOP) has evolved from
a small "church basement"
opera company to a viable not-for-profit arts
organization specializing in providing music educational outreach, music
training, and offering performance opportunities to Chicago area emerging
artists.
LOP was founded when Chicago singers
Sasha Gerritson and Madeline Brent, recognizing the need for support of
aspiring artists and music students, teamed up to present Puccini's La
Boheme in the original Italian. With piano accompaniment only, an
all-volunteer cast of local artists, and donated space, costumes and
scenery, this first production played to 750 people in a Chicago area
church, and to 250 Chicago school children in a special demonstration
performance.
Positive community response and Board of Directors commitment
allowed L'Opera Piccola to pursue another season. In 1998, with a 20-piece orchestra
and full staging, Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro in Italian was presented to
1,350 people, including 325 Chicago areas school children in special miniopera
presentation.
